Because clearly, enough hasn't been written on the subject.

I wish I was one of those people who’s all, “I don’t care what anyone thinks! I’m going to dance like nobody’s watching, just like that Inspirational Magnet says!” But you guys, people ARE watching, despite the claims of the Inspirational Magnet, and as much as I’d like to say I just shrug my shoulders and go about my business never caring what others think, the truth is, I’m not built that way.

This rambly introduction relates (kind of tangentially) to the Topic du Jour of compensated reviews. I have a new post up on my other blog, and frankly, given all the talk swirling around compensated reviews lately, I felt kind of icky just linking over to it without saying my piece. I was worried, you see, that you guys would roll your eyes at me (especially those of you who are new here, and didn't see the post I had written about reviews a while back) thinking I'm...well, I don't know WHAT, exactly, but I couldn't bear the thought of it being something negative. And so, here we are. The compensated review battle lines are being draw once again, and I find myself…

Not caring at all.

Let me rephrase that. I care (clearly) about the perception you guys have of me and the standards whereby I select and write product reviews, but in terms of The Bigger Picture? COULDN’T CARE LESS, people. Perhaps that leaves me squarely in the minority, but I ask you, honestly, and in no way rhetorically, what IS the big deal here? Because I’m honestly lost. Doesn't good writing always prevail? No? Seriously, TELL ME WHAT THE BIG DEAL IS HERE.

As always, I can’t and wouldn’t presume to speak for any group, but as for me, no matter what I’m writing about, I really do strive to put together something that resembles decent writing. I didn’t start my blog to get anything special, and although great opportunities have been thrown my way, most notably in the past year (I MET TIM GUNN FOR CRISSAKES OMFG), I…well, I don’t believe the way I write OR what I write has suffered for it. I never, ever sit down and post for the sake of posting, and to wit, I never, ever post something with which I’m not satisfied, here or on my review blog. And it’s funny, because my god, I’m writing about such utterly trivial nonsense half (okay, 95%) of the time, that I feel ridiculous even attempting to defend or qualify what I do as “decent writing.” (And no, I’m not fishing, this is simply FACT.) But caring about what I choose to write--compensated reviews AND regular posts, be they about my kids or Venn Diagrams of Top Gun-- in and of itself makes me a "good" writer. I know, I know. We’re not supposed to acknowledge that we think we write well, but honestly, not one of us would keep it up if we didn’t think we had something to offer.

And really, that's just the thing. We all started out blogs for our own personal reasons. And hey, maybe someone's reason WAS "I care about becoming a big-time review blogger getting major companies courting me, and then I'll share my knowledge with the world!" It might not be your reason or my reason, but what makes that reason any less valid than the oft-repeated "I wanted to find other moms like me" refrain? Perhaps some people feel jealous, perhaps some people feel threatened, perhaps others bristle at the thought of people dictating How Things Should Be. I DON'T KNOW, and as stated, I'm genuinely confused as to the storm that's brewing. I'm not resorting to platitudes or saying "can't we all just get along?" Because--no. Not my point. I just wanted to get my feelings out about this.

There's a quote I love, and in many ways, try to incorporate into my life: "To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions. Both dispense with the need for thought." (credit: H. Poincare. And also, the New York City subway system.) I feel like it applies in so many ways to so many things. And with this, really, I look at each blog I read in a vacuum, and not in some black and white world where I Must Choose A Side. I've read some wonderfully inventive reviews, and I've read some dull regular blog posts. (What? WE ALL HAVE.) I've read blog posts that make me want to toss my laptop on a bonfire, weeping "I will never be that good!" and review posts that were clearly written with one hand out for the paycheck. WHATEVER. Point is, there's no absolute here, at least not one that I can see.

And despite what some other bloggers have experienced, I PERSONALLY have never been ambushed by a review. Every paid review I've ever seen has been clearly marked as such, and I follow that same practice, in the interest of full disclosure. I write honestly about the products I'm reviewing and think FOR A WHILE not only about how to say what I want to in a way that's not only tactful, but hopefully engaging to anyone who's reading it. When you put time and effort into your writing, it comes across. I hope.

And finally, on that note, yes, I do have a new post up on my other blog. Yes, I was compensated, but yes, I care about and stand behind it as I do everything I post here. You can read it, or not. But please know that I will never, ever try to trick you into reading what is clearly a compensated review, or shortchange you by throwing utter horseshit on the screen here, or there. I started this blog a few years ago with one reader, then two, and then a few more, and so on. I am grateful and happy that I HAVE people who read and comment on what I write, and I'd never try to take advantage of that. So, thank you for reading this, and well, everything of mine that you choose to read. Now, let's all get back to talking about the REALLY important stuff, like what the American Apparel ad team is smoking. Because MY GOD.

I KNOW! I don't know if I see it more because I'm pregnant, but have you seen the AA ad for maternity wear with the woman in a blue body suit? I'm I supposed to want to look like that? As if I don't already feel like a friggin whale. WTF?!

I think that photo was taken at the Main Street, Santa Monica store (just outside), and I'm EMBARASSED & ASHAMED that my city (and county and state...) can honestly be coming up with & trying to sell the hideous crap that has been coming out of there recently! I stop by the outlet on my way to wine tasting for cheap t-shirts & wife beaters (and this past weekend a cheap little polo dress), but that's as far as I'll go. I don't understand why grown adults feel the need to wear metallic leggings on any day of the year other than Haloween. And maybe Purim. GAH!

PS--I don't mind product reviews, but agree that it IS nice to know ahead of time what I'm getting myself into. But I guess I just don't care enough to get my panties in a bunch when a blogger **GASP** TRICKS me into reading a product review! The Horror!

Pretty much everything Sundry said.

And OMG! That outfit! My eyes! The bleeding that is coming from them now! Gah!!!

Oh man, I'm so glad I'm not the only one annoyed by the AA ads!! Because ... seriously?!

I don't get what the deal is either.

I have never know what AA is thinking. Yet their business continues so someone is buying it.

Dude, I read your reviews of potty training because I knew it would be funny, not because I need to know anything about potty training myself (I AM A BIG GIRL!). If people who are good writers and have a strong readership get asked to do reviews, more power to them. If people are fishing to do reviews that's another story. I just don't read those blogs.

I've never understood the people that get upset because someone writes a review for something they're being compensated before. Don't complain, don't send an email to the blogger or leave hate comments. Just remove them from your reader/don't visit their site/or even *gasp* skip the post! Personal responsibility people!!!

And yeah, the AA marketing team should be fired. I think I will complain, email them and leave hate comments on their blog.....

YES. Me, either. And that's why I hereby declare both of us awesome. That, and we would never rock a zip-up BODY SUIT (barf), unless it was part of the best Halloween costume ever, so eff you (haters, and) American Apparel.

I am right there with you! While I don't have a blog of my own, I have never understood all the kerfluffle over the reviews.

So, yes please more Venn diagrams and packing procrastination posts!

Also, I think I'll finally be watching Top Gun in full this weekend...

I'm with you 100%. I don't se what the big fat deal is. I have up ot this point turned down nearly everything, but this week I have up a post about a little sponsored trip I took and I have a review coming for which I received a product. I've agonizied about whether to do a seperate review site and for now, I'm keeping it on my regular blog. We'll see.

But the kerfluffle has made me nervous too.

That American Apparel ad girl looks like someone I knew in junior high... she had the same hairstyle and glasses. Oh, yeah. That was like 1982 or 1983!!

Full disclosure is a good thing, and I have always believed you have been fully transparent. Well, not YOU. You're not Casper or anything. Your writing and policy. You know what I mean.

I'm going to stop typing now. Sorry about all that.

Thank you for writing this. No really, thank you. What the hell is the big deal?

you will be surprised to hear this, Miss Metalia, but I agree with you, 100%. heh. ha.

I'm wondering why I never knew until tonight that you even HAD another site, lol. Now I have to go see what you've been reviewing, b/c I'm betting I'll wish I'd read it before now.

(And yes, American Apparel? PLEASE STOP NOW.)

Sometimes I do write just for the sake of writing. I have to get all the boring stuff out sometimes (ok, probably a lot of times) just so I can move on.

But anyway, good for you for doing what you want. You don't have to justify yourself.

Kimberly said...

You're right - a lot has been said but I'm liking your version best so far. Holla! (and I don't even say that)

Stefanie said...

I prefer that compensated reviews mention that they're compensated reviews, but like you said, you always do that, so I have no issue. My only issue is jealousy, actually. I want free stuff, too! :-)

And every time I see an American Apparel ad, I wonder if I'm completely old and out of touch or if they are just plain batshit crazy. Since YOU are neither old nor out of touch, I am going to assume it's the latter. Thank you for that.

Angella said...

Also sending you a fist bump.

I have a few BlogHer reviews coming down the pipe, and while they will be on my review blog, I will give them the same service that I do for my personal posts.

You are awesome. But we all know that.

Good writing is good writing, and you can be an authentic, true-to-your-self writer whether you're being compensated or not. You can also be full of shit and never get a dime for it. Ultimately, I think genuine writing prevails, and, hell, I believe in the work I do at my day job but you sure as hell better believe I take my paycheck seriously. When I promote our product (a product I usually believe in very strongly and very genuinely), I don't feel I'm blowing smoke to make a buck, but I'd be hard pressed to do the job very long for free. I don't think that takes away how well I do it or how much I love it, and the same can be said for blogging. We do it because we love it, but if we're getting paid for it, does that take away from the love? Shouldn't. Not if we're doing it well.

I must not be in the right circles because this is the first I've heard of this "Topic du Jour" and all I can say is whatever. No one is forcing anyone to read a blog. If you don't like what the blogger is doing...move along and find something you like. I personally LIKE reviews - compensated or not - I find the dirt on new products or am introduced to new things.

Kristabella said...

Totally agree with you 100%! What is the big deal?

Look, 99% of the time, you know almost right off the bat if the post is a review post. And most of the bloggers I read put a disclaimer. And who cares?

And really the people who are in it for freebies? Good for them! They are cashing in on this opportunity. I don't blame them one bit. It's so stupid that there is a line in the sand. GAWD!

Also, I sometimes write just for the sake of posting so I don't get out of the habit. Because I have the attention span of a gnat.

Shelly said...

Wait, is that ad supposed to make me WANT to buy those items? FAIL. But, they did have an uphill battle there.

rebcram said...

I read good writing by people I respect. If those people choose to write reviews, compensated or not, I will read those too.

It is obvious to me that you do put time and thought into what you write. I keep reading your stuff because it is entertaining, or makes me think, or makes me love the internet even more than I already do. I'm pretty sure I couldn't say the same about someone who was solely a blogger for hire.

But I wouldn't know, because I really don't read people like that.

I've read all the differing opinions and the whole time, in my head I was going, "Meh. Don't care." So thank you for this. Just one look at my blogroll will reveal that I read all kinds, all types. As long as it is GOOD WRITING.

Oh, you, with all your logic and discourse...

So well said. I've been quietly sitting on the sidelines thinking "I don't get it." I write reviews on a review site, don't do it on my site and continue to read the blogs I love whether they're promoting something or not. I never enter giveaways because that's not why I'm there, but honestly if some of my bloggy sistahs out there can make some coin (while being honest) more power to them!

Loved this post.
